Tali'Zorah Concept (No Mask) by Onyrica Tali'Zorah Concept (No Mask) by Onyrica
Like I said in what has become the most popular drawing in my scrapbook, I wasn't convinced about the Tali Bioware gave us, so I gave my own idea a spin.

Not 100% sure about it - I'm pretty convinced I'm just not too good at conveying my ideas through cell shading. Might try to do a more elaborate piece soon.

Do feel free to comment and criticise~

Bioware gave us a bad photoshop, which was their way of saying they never bothered to define what the Quarrians look like under their suits.

What you did was fantastic! She looks like an alien, and I could easily see her as Tali.

Great job!

Quarians don't have ears per say. They have ear analogues. Think of the Asari. They don't have ears, but holes on the side of the head which are obviously meant to be ears. The quarians have something different from regular ears as well.

Rather good concept work, shame BioWare didn't push it just a bit further for the official thing. I particularly like the texture to the hair. This would've been spot-on. Oh well, at least they gave us *something*
As to specific commentary, the sketched emotions on the top are the best part of this, for me. Top right is a bit more carefree than Tali really gets to experience in-universe but oddly it's also the one that says "Tali" to me the most clearly. *shrug* I'd :+fav: for that sketch alone, but the rest of it is well-executed too.
In any event great job, keep up the excellent linework. :)

I like the way you do her face. I really think that it is more "canon" than most other renditions. Much more realistic... but still alien.

Needs more of 'DAT ASS

In all honesty, I like it a lot, the gem at her tummy is a nice touch. She does need a bit more in the hip region, and her thighs look a bit too close together. Also, her forearms appear a bit too thick, you made them too human-proportioned. Her forearms are thinner and come to a smaller hand, her hand is proportional to a human one. Otherwise I like it a lot, though I have mixed feelings about the hair. It looks beautiful, but it looks sorta like dreads, something that she wouldn't have the ability to do if she was in her suit all the time, and would have a hard time fitting all that hair into her helmet.

The only other "Quarian Design" thing I'd nitpick is a personal preference. It's likely that her skin has a pinker hue to it, as Quarians are the only other species with red blood. Her visor is obviously tinted a dark purple/blue, meaning for her skin to appear the purple we're used to seeing, her skin would have to be towards the redder end of the spectrum. At least that's my logic.

As a positioning thing though, the full profile's position is rather bland and undynamic. Shifting her weight to one leg or the other would've helped considerably, would've accented her "assets" as well as hilighted the differences between her physiology and a humans. As many jokes as people make about her hips, their structure is noticeably different from a humans.

But to reiterate: I really like this, more so than I liked the lazy 'shop job they gave us in the game.

First, thanks for the massively-long comment. I don't think I've ever received as long as a comment as that~ xD

Now, to respond about everything, because I'm a nitpicker myself:

The hips: Yes, they should've been a bit wider, but that's something that slipped by when I was doodling the concept. Also, she's standing in a semi-profile, where regardless of how wide they were, they'd seem smaller by angle. You can see that this is something I've covered in my other rendition of her: [link]

The hair: Like I said in other comments, the hair isn't meant to be "hair", but more like the asari type of fringe, where it's an extension of skin. What I meant for her hair to be was a type of flesh/organic 'cable' of sorts which is flexible and durable enough to fit into the helmet and survive evolution. Just like skin.

The skin: while I agree that quarians may have had more pink-ish skin in their Rannoch days, you have to consider evolution inside the suit for 300 years has probably made their pigmentation dull out a bit. That's why I chose that shade of purple. Because it resembles discoloured human skin. It still goes with the red blood logic, but it also goes with the fact that one of the first things to change through evolution would be pigmentation.

The positioning: I drew this rhoughly at night, in an angle I thought would be good for a concept design. I wanted to show part of the profile as well as the front. Then, the feet were hell to draw and I ended up compromising anything I could do for something that seemed acceptable enough. That's why the feet may seem rather awkward, but again, the point of the picture wasn't to give the feeling of weight, but rather an opinion on what I deemed wrong with the original.

Like I said before, all of these things you mentioned were "fixed" in the more detailed rendition I did of her and that I linked previously to you.

Regardless, thanks for the tips and taking the time to post such a thought out comment. :3

That's the biggest comment you've gotten? Well that's crap, you deserve better o___o

That said, I missed the previous comments on her hair, if that's the case then woots. I still think it'd be difficult to fit into the helmet. That said, you're expecting evolution to work a lot faster than it does in a population that breeds at the speed sentients do. 300 years isn't enough for "hair" to significantly change in a species or even a population outside of cultural more's.

On the Skin: Actually, I think they'd be *pinker* now than before. The red blood would make their skin somewhat pink, but without sunlight or proper pignmentation or even exposure to the elements, their skin is probably somewhat thin, sensitive, pale, and somewhat transluscent. Odds are good that she'd be rather pink, whatever other coloration Quarians may have had fading. Very pale people, or those without coloration like Albinos actually have somewhat pink skin and eyes because the blood in their arteries gives them that color.
Still think your rendition looks bloody awesome, but just explaining ^_^

I'll add my critiques on the other picture there :)

I still can't figure out everyone's fascination with the purple space elf. Don't get me wrong, I like this version of tali a lot, hell its one of the best,it's detailed and shows her unsuited without the inappropriateness.

Well, it's not an 'elf' fascination per se.

About the purple coloring, it's a case of logic: if your race spends 300+ years inside suits, with no contact with bacteria or air whatsoever, your skin is likely to decoulour eventually. The purple, which kinda leans towards a greying hue, indicates this - it may have been another color once, but you'd assume that some form of discoloration had to happen.

About the ears, they're not meant to be elfish per se. If I did a more realistic rendering of the picture, you'd see I meant them to be rather flat against the skull. Again, because of their evolution, I'd assume that their ears had eventually adapted to the shape of their heads, to fit better within the suit.

In general also, the slimness, or fairy-like aspect also comes from an interpretation of Tali's voice and age. She's only 22-24 and for me she sounds like someone who's highly nervous, somewhat awkward, and that kinda blends into an image of elvish-like lightness.

But anyway, I hope you enjoyed your wall'o'text... xD

Thank you for your comment! ^^

That is a pretty damn nice concept - I love it! Also, this is the first time I saw someone drawing her whole body after ME3 release. Plus I like the addition of elvish type ears. never thought about it but it kind of suits her.

And yeah, I always imagined her having somewhat pointy ears. Then again, I don't mean them to stick out a lot - they're actually meant to be rather flat against the head. Wouldn't to good to have Zelda-esque ears when you've been earing a helmet for 300+ years~ xD

Welp, the way I imagined it is that it's not "proper" hair, but organic tendrils which are very flexible and easily shaped. While having the helmet on, she could just have it loose or tied against the back of her neck.

One day I should illustrate the concept. Maybe BW will take a hint~~ :D

Now that we have a good idea of what the Quarians look like, I really wold like to figure out how, since their world lacks insect life, their own bodies help spread seeds across the lands. Could those black lines have anything to do with it?

That's a point of view to consider~~ :D

I considered those lines to be a 'vein' type canal that connects every part of their body. I didn't think of a purpose tho, so... yeah, why not?

I still think quarians should be bald or have at least really short hair due to their helmets/hoods and the snugness of their suits, but overall this is how I envisioned Tali under her suit, you even included the cybernetics, which I appreciate.

:icononyrica:
Onyrica Featured By Owner Mar 23, 2012  Professional General Artist
Yeah, I though about that, but it didn't seem right to have a bald Tali, so instead I gave her thick organic tendrils for hair. I thought that, because they're like an extension of her skin, they're flexible and resistant enough to be slightly squashed under the helmet - just like Asari "hair".

Anyway, glad you like it! ^^

What i like about this is it's a great combine of what Bioware gave us and your own design, personally i REALLY like your take on her hair, namely the ponytail and couple strands infront of her face. Truly gives her that loveable young woman look that she is by the events of ME3.

I would LOVE to see this modeled into a something one can use in the game Garry's Mod. i could do some really cute ShepardxTali stuff with this :D

Wow, thanks for the long, thoughtful comment!

I'm really glad you like her. Just as I said in other comments, I felt that the picture they gave us in the game didn't like like the 20-something Tali is, and didn't fit properly with her cute voice.

Also, I always imagined that she wouldn't have normal, human hair, but rather a thicker, more 'cable-like' hair that could endure the 300+ years of evolution being inside a suit.

And on the mention of modeling her... I'd love to see that too. Shame I can't do it myself~ D:

nice work. never saw her face in game, but I've seen loads of fan pics since people have been beating the game, and this looks to be one of the better ones, very much reminds me of night elves from WoW, and the gap between fingers looks sort of odd, but fitting for an alien. nice work

Nice! It looks like a teen female human being with ostrich hands and feet. I've noticed Mass Effect's designers tend to put human bodies on their alien characters (including the robot ones!) but give them odd-looking feet and hands so they don't look exactly human.
